Salutations: Closings:
"Sehr geehrte" with female names and "Sehr geehrter" with male names; used in formal writing such as business letters. Literally, "very honored."  "Mit vielem (herzlichen) Dank im voraus," "thanking you in advance" -- for letters where a request is made (esp. in business).
"Hallo!" (+ name if desired) or even "Hallööööchen!" are informal to very informal ways of saying "Hi".  "Es grüßt Dich (/Euch/Sie)" (+your name), a friendly way to say "with kind greetings from..." Can also be used with: Deine (+ female name) or Dein (+male name)
"Na, Alter!" instead of male names and "Na, Alte!" for female names. A friendly ribbing.  "Es umarmt Dich (Euch/Sie)" (+ your name), "hugs and kisses" for family and good friends. 
"Viele Grüße aus Deutschland" is "greetings from Germany." Great for postcards! Put it after the ususal salutation of "Lieber/Liebe".  "Mit freundlichen Grüßen" -- "with friendly greetings", all-purpose.
