Fall 2002
The General
Education 'Contemporary Issues' Core Requirement
What is
the Core?
The interdisciplinary GenEd Core courses focus on significant national
and global issues of our time. They will raise your awareness about
what it means to be a responsible citizen of your community, the U.S.,
and the world. Because they are taught by teams of professors from
different disciplines, they give you the chance to experience how
insights and solutions are sought through a combination of approaches.
You will begin taking these courses in your sophomore year.
This
course will introduce you to an important contemporary scientific issue
such as global climate change, nuclear waste disposal, genetic engineering,
environmental health risks, dwindling energy resources, planetary exploration,
or new developments in medicine. This course draws upon basic principles
from the biological and physical sciences, applying the scientific method,
scientific data analysis, reasoning and logic. Faculty from two different
disciplines will teach the course, including at least one from biology,
chemistry, environmental sciences, geoscience, molecular biology, or
physics.
