You probably wonder just what we mean by the college motto, "we build minds: minds build everything else." Actually, we intend no mystery by the motto, and you should take it quite literally. Faculty members are dedicated to providing students with the foundation skills and knowledge that will allow them to be successful throughout the challenges and changes in their lives. Each of our majors and minors shares a core commitment to building minds that are analytical, flexible, culturally sophisticated, and interpersonally effective. Research regularly shows that people with such minds are the ones who are most successful in managing the challenges of modern society. In other words, people with well-built minds are people with well-built lives.

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Montclair State University is the largest of five colleges and schools. Our 175 full-time faculty members are custodians of much of the general education courses required of all students at the university.
