We build minds. Minds build everything else.

The motto of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences points to the fact that traditional liberal studies serve as the foundation of a university education. The college's curriculum emphasizes the development of analytic skills, communication skills, and social understanding. Our students can study the traditional liberal studies, such as philosophy and literature, along with courses on the vanguard of contemporary developments, such as cultural studies, cognitive science, and film studies. Degrees in this college are recognized as an excellent preparation for any number of careers, or for professional and graduate study.

Several departments and programs in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences provide internship or other applied study options. Anthropology, Justice Studies, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology feature field study, apprenticeship, or internship opportunities. Communication Sciences and Disorders and Legal Studies staff clinics that provide professional training for students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Several departments offer certificate programs, such as those in child advocacy [Psychology], speech/language processes [Communication Sciences and Disorders], and paralegal studies [Legal Studies/Justice Studies]. Teacher certification programs are offered in English, French, Italian, Latin, Linguistics, Psychology, Social Studies, and Spanish. Traditional liberal arts programs in the College also provide applied study options. English and History, for instance, each have courses that provide the opportunity for students to tutor elementary school children or assist with the programs and research of local community organizations.

A highlight of CHSS is its interdisciplinary programs: African American Studies, Archaeological Studies, Cognitive Science, Film Studies, General Humanities, Justice Studies, Latin American and Latino Studies, and Women's Studies. Each of these programs allows students to explore a theme or area of interest from a number of perspectives. Students interested in African American issues, for example, can study the history and literature of African American people, as well as the sociological and psychological factors that affect ethnic identity. Most of the College's interdisciplinary programs draw from a wide range of departments within CHSS to build their major or minor programs. Two are sponsored jointly by CHSS and another school at MSU: the Cognitive Science minor draws on courses from both CHSS and the College of Science and Math; the Film Studies minor is shared by CHSS and the School of the Arts. All of the interdisciplinary programs in CHSS provide students with a unique educational opportunity - for integrated study beyond the bounds of any one discipline. Students may minor in any of these programs; Justice Studies and Women's Studies also offer a major.

Foreign language programs in the College offer excellent opportunities for students to immerse themselves in another language and culture through our study abroad programs. Typically, the college offers several such programs each year, in places such as London, Nice, Madrid, Sienna, and Guadalajara.

Faculty in the college are leaders in the use of educational technology at Montclair State University. In addition to using in-class technology, such as computer-aided instruction and innovative software, many faculty supplement their courses with some form of web-based learning. Some courses are taught entirely on the web or via live synchronous learning.

The courses of study within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences have been at the core of the educational enterprise at MSU since it was established nearly one hundred years ago. The college continues to focus its energies, grow, develop, and change, in order to provide students with the very best in the liberal arts and social science traditions. We believe this is what keeps our programs dynamic and our foundational approach to education solid. We'll help you build your mind . . . the rest is up to you.
