Alpha Kappa Delta

The International Sociological Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Delta, originated in the Department of Sociology at the University of Southern California in 1920. Professor Emory S. Bogardus organized the first chapter of AKD to facilitate the interchange of ideas among sociology students and professors. Membership in the group was limited to undergraduate and graduate students who were engaged in research and who exemplified high scholarship standards.

Professor Bogardus chose the name Alpha Kappa Delta to represent the first three letters of the Greek words Anthropon (humankind), Katamanthanein (to investigate thoroughly), and Diakonesein (for the purpose of service).

Currently there are 340 chapters in 46 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Slovenia. The chapter at Montclair State was organized in 1985 under the leadership of Professor Candace Clark.


Membership Criteria

To be a member, you must:

• Be a Sociology major
• Have a GPA of 3.3 overall
• Have a GPA of 3.0 in Sociology courses
• Have completed your sophomore year prior to the semester you join AKD
• Have completed 12 semester hours in Sociology prior to the semester you join AKD

A National Initiation Fee of $40 is charged from all AKD initiates.
