 Below are examples of announcements and job postings we’ve seen in computational linguistics. The first announcement comes from the on-line "LanguageTech Net News" from the Language Technology Research Center at http://www.multilingual.com. It forecasts the boom in multilingual business accompanying the fast expansion of global markets:

According to a new report, the market for text-based language translation worldwide will move to $17.2 billion by 2003. The report, "Language Translation, World Market Overview, Current Developments and Competitive Assessment," is a product of Allied Business Intelligence. The report defines the market as covering three major segments: human translation, automatic translation and localization. Including adjunct markets—for example, translation tools, foreign language learning and dictionaries—would, ABI says, double their estimates. The 310-page report sells for $1,995.

 As markets expand, the need for multilingual tools mushrooms. We hear that large companies (Lernout and Hauspie, for example), small businesses, and new start-ups simply cannot hire enough linguists to keep up with development of products—from text editing systems and dictionaries to optical character recognizers, speech technology, machine translation, and globalization and localization tools and services. As you know, Microsoft had a large recruiting presence at ANLP in Seattle this year. And we see advertisements from around the world, aimed at different levels of education, but most calling for some training/experience with computers. Below is a sample from the May 00 LanguageTech Net News. Following that are samples forwarded to me by Clare Voss.

These are typical of what we see and should mean growing opportunities for computational linguists, especially those with expertise in more than one language.

Paragon Language Services, a Los Angeles-based language bureau specializing in translation, interpreting, typesetting, subtitling and voice-overs in over 90 languages, is seeking to fill the following positions:

Project Manager—A minimum of one year industry experience and/or degree in translation preferred. Excellent computer skills in both PC and Macintosh environments, organized, team player, deadline-driven. Knowledge of DTP systems and Web localization helpful.
