The Legal Studies Department at Montclair State University is committed to teaching students about law within the context of a quality liberal arts education. Our mission is to prepare our students for the highly competitive world of law by immersing them to critical thinking and analysis, theoretical considerations and practical applications, conflict management, research and writing, and the technological preparedness necessary for those engaging in both the study and practice of law.

We accomplish this mission on several levels. Through general education courses, we teach students to be consumers of law. Through our undergraduate program, we prepare students for a variety of law-related careers through rigorous courses of study which accentuate the interdisciplinary nature of law and provide a sound theoretical foundation.

The Department of Legal Studies offers Montclair State students the possibilities of an applied career in law as a Paralegal, Pre-Law preparation for a career as an attorney and a Masters of Arts in Legal Studies. Both the Paralegal and Pre-Law Programs
are minors which may be combined with many diverse majors on campus. A Paralegal Studies Certificate is also offered as an entry level paralegal program for post-baccalaureate students. The Master of Arts, with concentrations in Dispute Resolution and Legal Management, Information and Technology is offered as a career enhancement degree for non-lawyer professionals in the legal field.

As Department Chair, Dr. Norma Connolly provides all students with orientation to the various aspects of the program and should be contacted first. Dr. Lenore Molee serves as academic and career advisor for students in the Paralegal Studies Program. Dr.Reginia Judge serves as advisor for the paralegal minor and Post B.A. students. Dr. Marilyn Tayler is Director of the Justice Studies Major and University Prelaw advisor. Dr. Jack Baldwin LeClair serves as the Advisor for the M.A. in Legal Studies concentration in LMIT, department Pre-Law advisor, and Coordinator of Academic Computing for Legal Studies. Dr. Barbara Nagle is the Graduate Advisor to the Masters program in Legal Studies
