Instructions for Completing the LEXIS Assignment

  1. Go to Dickson 281 during lab hours or to Dickson 330 (Legal Studies Minilab). Lab hours are posted outside D281by the door. Lab hours for DI282 are most days 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Hours for DI330 are by appointment. Call the Department secretary, Ms. Washington at 973.655.4152 or Danielle Nappi, Graduate Assistant for Legal Studies Technology, at 973.655.7954.
  2. Sit at any of the computers in Dickson 281 or a designated machine in DI330. . If you do not see a Main Menu Screen, turn the computer on or push ctrl-alt-del keys simultaneously. In DI281 when the menu reappears, use the mouse to point the cursor to the Start button on the lower left hand part of the Windows 95 screen. Move the highlighted bar. move the highlighted bar to the selection which you want. Look for courses and legal studies.
  3. In DI330, choose CALR form the main menu in Windows 3.1. Using your mouse, click on Lexis Tutorial (the Lexis Tutorial).
  4. Prepare your query once you have completed the tutorial. Be prepared before you go on-line by preparing your query and at least one alternate query.
  5. Go to the query by clicking here: http://www.chss.montclair.edu/leclair/LS/calr/lexis98.html
  6. Use Lexis/Nexis/and Medis.
  7. Print the database screen of the jurisdiction you use by pressing the print screen key on your keyboard. Shepardize and autocite your results. Print one screen from the query screen, the first page of no more than the first pages of two cases or statute screens, and the end screen which gives you your time or use for the session.
  8. Write a three page background memo discussing the relevant law and facts . Write the results in standard memo form.
  9. Submit your results to your professor.

  11. Be patient and calm. Do not panic.
  12. Be polite to student staff. If, on the otherhand, you encounter rudeness or resistance to helping you from anyone, including lab assistants, E-Mail me immediately. I will adjust attitudes within 24 hours.
