Dr. Venezia Michalsen has been an Assistant Professor in the Justice Studies Department since the Fall 2008 semester. Her research and teaching focus on the topics of gender and justice, reentry and corrections. Before starting her position at Montclair State, Dr. Michalsen worked for almost six years at the Women’s Prison Association (WPA), a non-profit organization in New York City which helps women with criminal justice system histories realize new possibilities for themselves and for their families. She began at WPA as a Research Associate, but left the organization as the Director of the Analysis and Client Information Systems (ACIS) Department, where she managed the collection and analysis of client, service and outcome data. Dr. Michalsen earned her B.A. at Barnard College, her Masters in Criminal Justice at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and her Ph.D. in Criminal Justice at the CUNY Graduate Center.
For her doctoral dissertation, entitled Going Straight for her Children? Women’s Desistance after Incarceration, Dr. Michalsen interviewed 100 formerly incarcerated women about their relationships with their children and their desistance behavior (the degree to which they are stopping their involvement in criminal behavior). While at WPA, Dr. Michalsen worked on a research study, entitles Women, Reentry and Everyday Life: Time to Work? investigating the role of time usage in women’s reentry. She is currently working on publications based on her dissertation research and on the Women, Reentry and Everyday Life study. At Montclair, Professor Michalsen teaches classes on Statistics, Research Methods, Criminology, Women’s Studies and Women and Justice. |
