Welcome to the Home Page for Dr Grover Furr's course ENLT 176, "World Literature: Coming of Age Theme"

ORGANIZATION: This page has the following sections:

  1. The Syllabus for the course. I've already handed it out in class to you, but you can always consult it here as well.
  2. The Schedule of Required Readings.
  3. Guidelines for the Short Papers on each novel
  4. The Eight Main Themes which I present to you at the beginning of the course, and which you'll find in these and many, many other novels and literature from formerly colonial cou ntries. NOTE: This will not be available until after the first two full classes, when I'll present them and we can discuss them.
  5. The Grading System for the Biweekly Assignments
  1. Links to other sites that are relevant to our course.

This is really what you'll find on the rest of this page -- you can get to the other materials by "jumping" from the links above

Imperialism

Here are some good readings that will help you understand the concept of imperialism, how it works, and how important it is to understand it if you are to ever understand what's going on in the world!

Homework

I will post all writing assignments on this page, at this spot, whose 'bookmark' is 'hw' (in lower case, without the ' '). The URL of this, the "homework" section of the World Literature Home Page, is: http://www.shss.montclair.edu/english/furr/wlhpf97.htmlv#hw. Create a 'bookmark' of your own to this URL, and you go directly to this part of the page, and don't have to 'scroll down' to find the homework assignments.

On Guy Endore, Babouk:

On Sembene Ousmane, God's Bits of Wood:

Here is a list of all the major, and almost all of the minor, characters in the novel, along with a short description of who they are and where they live. You may want to print it out to have it handy.

On Ngugi wa-Th'iongo, Matigari:

On Manlio Argueta, One Day of Life:

On Barrios de Chungara, Let Me Speak!:
