ASSIGMENT ON GI ANTIWAR MOVEMENT

     1. Please read Heinl, "Collapse of the Armed Forces", and the
page about the David Cortwright book from the _NYRB_ (the _New York
Review of Books_), 1976. 

     Heinl, an Army historian, looks at the soldiers' discontent with
the war from a military perspective. Discuss how he accounts for it.

     Length: 150 words (about 15 lines).

     2. Please read Smedley Butler, "America's Armed Forces In Time of
Peace: The Army", published in 1935. Butler was the Commandant of the
Marine Corps in the 1920s, and the most decorated American soldier.

     Discuss how Butler has come to view US foreign intervention in
the early part of the century, and any similarities with the Vietnam
War as you see it.
