ASSIGNMENT ON BEN CHITTY'S TALK

     Please write 150 words or so concerning Ben Chitty's talk. Feel
free to think and react any way you like, but try to make sense of it
in the context of the Vietnam War.

     Then, please come back to the 
Discussion Forum
and "reply" to, or comment upon, a post or a reply by another student in the
class.

     Please make your posts/comments/replies thoughtful. But don't be
afraid to disagree, even argue, and to engage "the big questions."
Naturally, you can disagree with Ben Chitty, or me (Prof. Furr), as
well as with each other. No 'orthodoxies' here! I intend to uphold
'freedom of discussion.'

     Finally: On Tuesday we will begin discussing The Vietnam
War in American Stories, Songs and Poems. Please read:

     * the first section (stories "Inside the War" and "Against the
War", pp. 1-115;

     * Bruce Franklin's essays introducing these sections: 1-15;
70-75.
